Bush declares war on freedom of the press

Using many of the questionable surveillance and monitoring techniques that brought both questions and criticism to his administration, President George W. Bush has launched a war against reporters who write stories unfavorable to his actions and is planning to prosecute journalists to make examples of them in his "war on terrorism."

Bush recently directed Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to use "whatever means at your disposal" to wiretap, follow, harass and investigate journalists who have published stories about the administration's illegal use of warrantless wiretaps, use of faulty intelligence and anything else he deems "detrimental to the war on terror."

Reporters for The New York Times, which along with Capitol Hill Blue revealed use of the National Security Agency to monitor phone calls and emails of Americans, say FBI agents have interviewed them and criminal prosecutors at the Justice Department admit they are laying "the groundwork for a grand jury that could lead to criminal charges,"

CIA Director Porter Goss told Congress recently that "it is my aim and it is my hope that we will witness a grand jury investigation with reporters present being asked to reveal who is leaking this information. I believe the safety of this nation and the people of this country deserve nothing less."

As part of the investigation, the Justice Department, Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency are wiretapping reporters' phones, following journalists on a daily basis, searching their homes and offices under a USA Patriot Act provision that allows "secret and undisclosed searches" and pouring over financial and travel records of hundreds of Washington-based reporters.

Spokesmen for the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security admit there are "ongoing investigations" regarding publication of stories "involving threats to national security" but will not reveal what those investigations include.

In addition to using the USA Patriot Act to pry into the lives of journalists, the Justice Department has also dusted off a pre-World War I law to prosecute people who receive classified information, although the law was aimed at military personnel not civilians.

"This is the first administration that I can remember, including Nixon's, that said we need to think about a law that would put journalists who print national security things up in front of grand juries and put them in jail if they don't reveal their sources," says David Gergen, who served as President Regan's director of communication and also worked in the Nixon and Ford White Houses.

Political scientist George Harleigh, who worked in the Nixon administration, says such use of federal law enforcement authority was illegal when Nixon tried it and still so today.

"We're talking about a basic violation of the Constitutional guarantee of a free press as well as a violation of the rights of privacy of American citizens," Harleigh says. "I had hoped we would have learned our lessons from the Nixon era. Sadly, it appears we have not."

In recent weeks, the FBI has issued hundreds of "National Security Letters," directing employers, banks, credit card companies, libraries and other entities to turn over records on reporters. Under the USA Patriot Act, those who must turn over the records are also prohibited from revealing they have done so to the subject of the federal probes.

"The significance of this cannot be overstated," says prominent New York litigator Glenn Greenwald. "In essence, while the President sits in the White House undisturbed after proudly announcing that he has been breaking the law and will continue to do so, his slavish political appointees at the Justice Department are using the mammoth law enforcement powers of the federal government to find and criminally prosecute those who brought this illegal conduct to light.

"This flamboyant use of the forces of criminal prosecution to threaten whistle-blowers and intimidate journalists are nothing more than the naked tactics of street thugs and authoritarian juntas."

Just how widespread, and uncontrolled, this latest government assault has become hit close to home last week when one of the FBI's National Security Letters arrived at the company that hosts the servers for this web site, Capitol Hill Blue.

The letter demanded traffic data, payment records and other information about the web site along with information on me, the publisher.

Now that's a problem. I own the company that hosts Capitol Hill Blue. So, in effect, the feds want me to turn over information on myself and not tell myself that I'm doing it. You'd think they'd know better.

I turned the letter over to my lawyer and told him to send the following message to the feds:

Fuck you. Strong letter to follow.

Doug, I am surprised! Don't you realize that if your reporting on the unconstitutional goings on with this administration lead to impeachment, that would be a national security problem? They are so smart that only they can run this country, thus the threat being somebody "less capable" is a national security threat.

With this current group in D.C. (both Reps and Dems) their opinion is: Anything or anybody that threatens their power is a threat thus they must be at least throttled if not eliminated. Does anybody honestly beleive that the Homeland Security Dept or the Patriot act are there to protect ordinary citizens? The idea of this happening in THIS country is so off the wall Orwellian, that...well...I don't know. Words fail me. He's got to go...and instead of feathers to go with the tar, it should be copies of the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Constitutional guarantees? WHAT constitutional guarantees? They started trashing the constitution with the so-called, false, and illegal ratification of the 14th ammendment and with supreme court decisions in the late 1800's to early 1900's. Since Lincoln, we have been under martial law, the president has supreme rule and is only answerable to the "supreme" court.

A lot of us are going to have to fall on our swords. Our family histories are full of fallen heroes. Guess it's our turn to step up to the plate, again. I'm a Vietnam combat vet, been to jail a couple of times. (recovery is like that).
What bothers me is don't these people realize that they will not be in power forever, or is this the start of a 1000 years type of thing.

way to go doug, i quit work in 2003 when i knew for sure that our government under bush and his complicit stacked congress were a complete fraud. every time i leave my house , i come back see things out of place , but havent seen anything missing yet, but what security risk do i pose, i call my wife who 2500 miles away with our grandchild who is one of the victims of the birth defects our ex soldiers are passing on, he is 25 months today and he has had constsant seizures every day of his life, he is on a feeding tube and needs almost constant 24 hour care, fortunately last month one of the over 25 specialist is this area decided to take him off all medications and not feed him for a week , when i heard this all i could think of was that poor logan was going to be the next schiavo, fortunately though this treatment appears to be helping , in the last 10 days logan has went from almost nonstop seizures to around 3 to 5 small ones a day, imagine after you have 2 insurance policies by both parents on him and yet you still owe over a million dollars in fees despite this insurance. that is not what gets me though,and i also call my mom, other than that i dont call anyone , i have made no overseas calls in my life, i dont write letters other than to my congressmenand senators, i am basically a hermit , becaue my wife is 2500 miles away doing what has to be done , and yet i cant even fly to see her, because yes i too am on the no fly list. and when i called to appeal they would give me no reason nor would they let me fly. i am not one to drag my own self into court, i know i should sue them, but i have turned that lawsuit over to God and will let him sue the government on my behalf, it works for me. i dont need money ,i am not rich but i have enuff to live frugally til these usurpists and despots are thrown out on their tails or til they destroy our planet. either way doug there are 1000 times more of us than they are of these criminals in dc, i hope these bastards in dc get the justice they deserve. keep up the good fight , we are with you

It would appear a lock on everyone is with Doug.

What appears to be happening at the moment is that they are selecting certain individuals, the little pockets of "resistance" or "telling it like it is" by the intelligent reasoning people such as those on CHB and basically harrassing, not necessarily threatening them KNOWING people like Doug will talk about it here.

They have already reasoned that 70% of Americans are fast asleep and not likely to wake anytime soon. That, they see makes their job that much easier.. Again, by pre-selecting a few of the more vociferous ones. like Doug who in fact DOES OWN the website, they believe they will frighten others into submission,,,and guess what, for some they are correct.

When I come to the USA for a vacation in the next weeks, I almost fully expect to be given the "evil eye look", maybe selected for a few additional questions you normally don't or wouldn't get. Then if you were so bold as to ask why the questions you would be given the stock, Oh we do that to every 100 people or so...at random...you know, something like that you could never prove.

Hell, I figure if Kennedy, who is so unmistakeably recognizable in person can make the list, anyone can.

Certainly publishing then letter received at CHB would be a good thing but that I believe would send a clear and distinct message, actually two of them.

1. I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore

2. I will not be intimidated.

There are the 98% majority that freely express opinions on this site and who knows how many others might be tipped off and would actually read the posted letter,joining the party, backing you up all the way Doug.

To do nothing about it other than give it to a lawyer to send a letter to some disinterested bureaucrat who will appropriately file it, says, I am intimidated, which was the entire purpose in the first place.

I say copy and paste it here and below it, have just two lines.

The parties signing below say we will not be intimidated. That if honest and free speech is about to be against the law in America we demand that the Congress draft and Mr. Bush sign that law for all to see.

That IMO will definately intimidate them.

Isn’t it amazing that while this administration talks about spreading democracy and ending tyranny around the world, it is slowly dismantling democracy and instituting tyranny here in the United States? National Security Letters that have the power of a subpoena, don’t require a judge’s approval and require complete silence on the part of the recipient? A program touted as an anti-terrorist surveillance initiative that openly spies on our own citizens, all without court approval? The Department of Homeland Security?

I wish I could blame only the Republicans and the President for this mess, but I can’t. I have to also blame those cowardly Democrats who don’t want to appear “soft on defense” or soft on the never ending “war on terrorism”. How about those independents that have yet to raise their voices or their fists in condemnation? Hell, even the great Senator John McCain sold his soul for Karl Rove’s donor list.

Martyrdom has never appealed to me, not in the sense of the Middle Ages or today’s Muslim extremists, but you know, sometimes, you just have to take one for the team. Keep fighting the good fight, Doug and let’s hope that America wakes up from this nightmare and starts taking back our hopes, dreams and freedoms from those who would deny us.

As usual, your rant is dead on.Speaking truth to power has always been a journalist's first and main responsibility.Todays corporate controlled media has already turned its back on this basic principle but I guess the administration doesn't feel it has enough control over the flow of information so it must go to even greater lengths to try to keep us in the dark and in line.

I agree that Bush and Co. should be impeached, incarcerated and every damning document published around the world. That said, he is just using the tools that have been built up over the last half century to allow an executive coup. The federal government needs to go back to what it was mandated to do by the Constitution and stay out of individual citizens lives. Re-assign the DEA to focus on terrorists, let the states handle law enforcement as it was meant to be. Cut the defence budget and increase education assistance. Allow Medicare/aid to negociate prices. Stop bowing to corporations and special interests. Why is it that the Unted States, the home of the free, is a slave to "special interests" when the only reason for the government to exist is for the people? The ONLY special interest that should exist is the best interest of the people of America.
Yes the current administration should be fired, but the bigger problem is that there are very few people in our federal government that have the people they represent in mind when they cast their vote.
If every person that has gotten a NSL was to publish it, whould they prosecute everyone? If the press wants to remain free, they need to use their power to shine a light onto the abuses of power.
To use a tagline from an upcoming movie : The people should not fear their government. The government should fear the people.

The thing to remember, and I am sure of this, is that the one thing they never plan on is resistance.

They never expected the Iraqis to fight for their country and they don't expect us too, either. It is a huge blind spot for them and they simply have no idea what to do about it.

That's why they are flailing around, harassing journalists and building prison camps -- they are freaked out. Oppression is the only response they know, but it is one that only makes the situation steadily worse. They are losing control.

Let's keep up the pressure, folks.

Well David Williams and others this all looks gloomy indeed. We'll have to (learn how to)suffer, fight,persevere, and even joke about our predicament. This is the right time to study precedents that are culturally speaking not too far from home: the establishment of communist dictatorships in Eastern Europe and of course fascism in Europe. We should find out how the majority of people managed to preserve their dignity and slowly undermined their suppressors. The book I am reading now '911 the ultimate truth' I have to admit is helpfull. It is produced by signs-of-the-times. Even though signs-of-the-times is cult-like and maybe dangerous I find they have something to contribute. I would like to hear others comment on it.

Many of you probably already have either heard of or read the 1935 Sinclair Lewis novel "It Can't Happen Here!", about the rise of a fascist government in the U. S. in the mid-1930's. Some of it is a little sentimental, maybe overly optomistic about the chances of an insurgency to succeed in stopping a truly entrenched corportocracy. It also draws many of the main characters as too incompetent. The really chilling parts deal with what happens to those who cross the regime. If you think that we're going to end up running discussion groups in "Gitmo II", think again. They've been practicing their torture techniques for US! There's a quote from Lewis that has been making the rounds this past weekend that really hits home: "Facism in this Country will arrive wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross".

some posts urge preparedness for "the next level". i think it's going to involve affinity groups and cellular organization for one initial duty: watch lists. we have to start keeping eyes out for one another and if anyone goes missing, others must spread the word and initiate the search. create your group among people you've known personally for some time. keep the groups small and don't tell anyone outside your group that you exist as a group. only contact groups you are aware of under emergency circumstances.

So, according to Bush and Company, it's wrong to publish information about their wrong-doings because it threatens our national security. (As far as I can see, out national security was threatened far more when the mainstream media FAILED to report on earlier misdeeds.) Meanwhile, in the reports on the flap over Dubai ownership of port management, and a recent report on airport security, details have been published about where our weaknesses lie. And there's no fuss at all. I guess putting our vulnerabilities out there for Al Qaeda et al to see is no big deal, but bad press for Bush is unforgivable. Shows you where Bush's priorities lie, in case we didn't know.

Seems Mr. Bush and his cronies have confused national security with personal security, or self with state. Isn't that what Saddam did? and a few other dictators throughout history.

There are two ways to fight this: One is to refuse and give the FED something to fight against, and undoubtedly many providers will just comply. The other is to make the information-to-noise ratio so high it isn't worth it. If every US internet user volunteered the Fed just 1 piece of paper (nothing electronic) with some information about themselves (perhaps telling them about what breed of dog you own) spying on American "dissidents" would be nearly impossible.

We need to create a list of companies that comply with the requests so we know where not to do business. If fighting the request is cheaper than all the business a company might lose, guess which one they'll choose.

Violence never solved anything. Great social and political changes have come about because of social movements. The Sufferage movement in the 20's, Ghandi in India and Civil rights movement in the 60's, to name a few, were social movements that, after long struggles finally yielded results. Never underestimate the power of mass populations to alter the course of events without resorting to violence. Its all up to us.
The corporations and the rich have invested billions over the last thirty years to get to where we are now. This will not be changed easily.

By the time people begin to understand, will it be too late? Will those who dare to speak up be swept into gulags to forever disappear?

Bush brings the law down on the journalists? Will this be allowed to happen? It's already OK to plant ficticious "news" articles wherever they chose. He now wants the line item veto. Who will he punish with that ability? Who will he cause to "fall into line"?

Sometimes I feel that I'm at the bottom of a dry well in the middle of an uninhabited field, hollering for help - but no one hears and no one's coming.

The new Zogby poll gauging the opinions of American troops in Iraq has drawn attention mostly because it finds that 72 percent believe the United States should withdraw in a year or less and only 23 percent favor George W. Bush’s plan to “stay the course.”

But the poll also illustrates the power of propaganda.

Shockingly, 85 percent of the troops questioned believe they are fighting in Iraq “to retaliate for Saddam’s role in the 9-11 attacks” – one of the key Iraq War myths built by Bush’s frequent juxtaposition of references to Osama bin-Laden and Saddam Hussein.

This subliminal message has stuck with the vast majority of U.S. troops even though Bush eventually acknowledged publicly that there is no evidence linking Saddam to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.

In other words, more than eight in 10 of the U.S. soldiers and Marines in Iraq think they are there avenging the 3,000 people killed on Sept. 11, even though the U.S. government lacks evidence of the connection.

The poll also found that 77 percent think that a major reason for the war was “to stop Saddam from protecting al-Qaeda in Iraq” – another myth nurtured by the Bush administration even though Hussein’s secular government was a bitter enemy of al-Qaeda’s Islamic fundamentalists.

Traitorous Troops?

Despite this confusion over the reasons for the war, the poll exploded another myth promoted by the administration and its media allies – that Americans are unpatriotic if they criticize Bush’s policies, because to do so would damage troop morale.

It turns out the troops want the war brought to a quick end because they have concluded it’s unwinnable based on their own experiences, not from the carping of home-side naysayers, often denounced as “traitors” by Bush’s supporters.

It seems somehow that 72 percent of the U.S. soldiers stationed in Iraq have become “traitors,” too.

But what’s going on? How can the Bush administration and its supporters get away with spreading so much confusion about the reasons for invading Iraq? How can they justify demonizing so many Americans who disagree with the war policy?

The answer seems to be that the relentless application of propaganda was always part of the administration’s strategy for herding the American public in the direction favored by Bush and his neoconservative advisers.

Remember Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s Office of Strategic Influence, the secretive project designed to manipulate international opinion but which was expected to “blow back” some of its propaganda onto the American people.

On Feb. 19, 2002, five months after the Sept. 11 terror attacks and 13 months before the invasion of Iraq, the New York Times reported that this Pentagon office was “developing plans to provide news items, possibly even false ones, to foreign media organizations” in order “to influence public sentiment and policy makers in both friendly and unfriendly countries.”

News of this disinformation program caused outrage and led to a Pentagon announcement that the office had been shut down. But Rumsfeld later explained that the concept was kept alive even though the office was closed.

“There was the Office of Strategic Influence,” Rumsfeld said. “You may recall that. And ‘Oh, my goodness gracious, isn’t that terrible; Henny Penny, the sky is going to fall.’ I went down that next day and said, ‘Fine, if you want to savage this thing, fine, I’ll give you the corpse. There’s the name. You can have the name, but I’m gonna keep doing every single thing that needs to be done’ and I have.” [See Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting press release, Nov. 27, 2002]

So the Pentagon continued its propaganda project of placing stories, possibly false, in the foreign media, with some of them surely feeding back into the U.S. political debate though the U.S. government is barred from disseminating propaganda at home.

In 2003, the Pentagon produced another propaganda program described in a document called “Information Operations Roadmap,” which describes the need for influencing journalists, enemies and the public.

The document recognizes that Americans consume propaganda – on TV and through the Internet – that is intended for foreign audiences. [BBC, Jan. 28, 2006]

Propaganda Abroad

While the Pentagon insists that its public information is accurate, albeit promoting images favorable to the United States, the BBC registered a different opinion about the stories circulated by the U.S. military during the Iraq invasion.

“We’re absolutely sick and tired of putting things out and finding they’re not true,” a senior BBC journalist told the Guardian. “The misinformation in this war is far and away worse than any conflict I’ve covered, including the first Gulf War and Kosovo. …

“I don’t know whether they (Pentagon officials) are putting out flyers in the hope that we’ll run them first and ask questions later or whether they genuinely don’t know what’s going on – I rather suspect the latter.” [The Guardian, UK, March 28, 2003]

Military analysts also shake their heads at how reliant the administration has become on propaganda for promoting its goals. Sam Gardiner, an instructor in strategy at the National War College, said the Bush administration has waged a systematic P.R. campaign to sell the invasion of Iraq to the American public.

“There is absolutely no question that the White House and the Pentagon participated in an effort to market the military option,” Gardiner said. “The truth did not make any difference to that campaign. To call it fixing is to miss the more profound point.

“It was a campaign to influence. It involved creating false stories; it involved exaggerating; it involved manipulating the numbers of stories that were released; it involved a major campaign to attack those who disagreed with the military option; it included all the techniques those who ran the marketing effort had learned in political campaign.” [Kevin Zeese, Democracy Rising, June 23, 2005]

Government Propaganda

So, there was the tale about Pfc. Jessica Lynch, both her fierce resistance under fire and her daring rescue from a hostile Iraqi hospital – when the reality was that she never fired a shot and the hospital staff presented no opposition to her rescue. [AP, Nov. 11, 2003]

Then, there was ex-football player Pat Tillman, who died in Afghanistan. Contrary to official reports of his death in a firefight while on patrol, he actually was killed by friendly fire, a reality that was suppressed for five weeks while the Bush administration milked the propaganda advantage of Tillman’s death.

“I’m disgusted by things that have happened with the Pentagon since my son’s death,” his mother, Mary, told the Los Angeles Times. “I don't trust them one bit.”

The truth was stretched, too, when it came to containing negative stories, like the abuse of prisoners at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison. Bush said the problem was limited to a few guards on the night shift and that the United States doesn’t engage in torture.

The reality has turned out to be much worse. Torture and other abuse of prisoners have reached from Guantanamo Bay to Iraq and Afghanistan – finally overwhelming official denials.

The Bush administration has practiced propaganda on domestic issues as well. In 2005, the Government Accountability Office objected to the broadcasting of fake “news videos” that were designed to look like independent news stories. The GAO said the stories appeared to violate federal rules against propaganda. [AP, Feb. 19, 2005]

The GAO also reported that the administration spent more than $1.6 billion on public relations and media contracts in a 2 ½ year span, including hiring advertising firms to sell its policies to the America public. [www.democrats.reform.house.gov]

Beyond this expensive outreach, the Bush administration has succeeded in gaining cooperation from U.S. news organizations in its news management. Bowing to the administration’s national security claims, New York Times executives held the story of warrantless wiretaps for more than a year, possibly altering the outcome of 2004 election.

Violence in Iraq

And what has happened to journalists who act independently and write what they observe in war zones like Iraq?

In 2005, they were killed at a record rate, including a growing number of them becoming the victims of “targeted” killings, according to the International Federation of Journalists. At least 89 journalists were murdered because of their professional work out of a total of 150 media deaths, IFJ said.

“The numbers are staggering,” IFJ general secretary Aidan White said.

IFJ listed 38 deliberate killings in the Middle East in 2005, with 35 occurring in Iraq. Five other media workers in Iraq were killed by U.S. troops, bringing the total killed by coalition forces to 18 since the U.S.-led invasion in March 2003. [Reuters, Jan. 23, 2006]

In April 2003, as U.S. forces were moving into the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a U.S. tank fired on the Palestine Hotel, which housed foreign journalists, purportedly in “response to hostile fire.” Two journalists were killed, but other reporters monitoring the fighting from their balconies denied that there had been any shooting from the hotel.

“There is simply no evidence to support the official U.S. position that U.S. forces were returning hostile fire from the Palestine Hotel,” said a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists. [CBS, May 28, 2003]

U.S. news executives also have complained about strong-arm tactics used to prevent journalists from reporting on incidents that might undermine support for the war back in the United States.

“Our journalists in Iraq have been shoved to the ground, pushed out of the way, told to leave the scene of explosions; we’ve had camera disks and videotapes confiscated, reporters detained,” said Associated Press Washington bureau chief Sandy Johnson. [Nation, Dec. 25, 2003]

As the Iraqi insurgency grew in 2004, so did the heavy-handed tactics against journalists. In May, three Reuters journalists and one working for NBC said U.S. forces subjected them to beatings and other abuse similar to what was later revealed at Abu Ghraib prison.

“Two of the three Reuters staff said they had been forced to insert a finger into their anuses and then lick it, and were forced to put shoes in their mouths, particularly humiliating in Arab culture,” Reuters reported.

“The soldiers told them they would be taken to the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, deprived them of sleep, placed bags over their heads, kicked and hit them and forced them to remain in stress positions for long periods.” [Reuters, Oct, 14, 2004]

The British newspaper, The Guardian, described Iraqi police following the American lead in adopting their own harsh tactics toward journalists in 2004:

“Dozens of journalists in Najaf, including the entire BBC team, were forced from their hotel at gunpoint and detained by local police. Around 60 journalists from local and foreign news organisations including the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Independent as well as the BBC, were held for almost an hour while police officers delivered what one correspondent described as an ‘unexpected press conference at gunpoint.’ …

“Correspondents in the Najaf Sea hotel said around a dozen policemen, some masked, stormed into the rooms of journalists and forced them into vans and a truck. The Independent's Donald Macintyre reported that the police, some masked, ‘shouted threats and abuse at the reporters, along with their Iraqi drivers and translators, and fired about a dozen shots inside and outside the hotel before taking them before the police chief, Major-General Ghaleb al-Jazaari, to hear his emotional complaints about media coverage and the sufferings of police officers during the present crisis’.” [Guardian, Aug., 26, 2004]

One of the lessons of “democracy” apparently being taught to the Iraqi government is the need to control the information reaching the public, at almost any cost. What American spin doctors call “spreading our values” has become the tireless manipulation of public perceptions within an endless “information war.”

Media stories are planted; public relations firms are hired to shape the opinions of an unsuspecting public; reporters who document contrary facts are deemed the enemy and are subject to bullying or worse.

Rumsfeld’s dictums about the need to wage “strategic” media campaigns may be right in a way that his words didn’t fully articulate. The truth must be managed lest the American people learn what the administration is actually doing.

This is indeed deeply disquieting. If it were simply a question of prosecuting reporters who disclose classified information, that would be one thing -- Bush would be within his legal rights to do that (although if he doesn't want to reveal himself as a total hypocrite, he'd better be prepared to prosecute anyone within his own administration who does the same). Governmental whistleblowers who uncover corrupt and illegal policies should ideally be protected from persecution -- unfortunately, however, persecution of whistleblowers is by no means limited to the government (just ask Frank Serpico or Jeffrey Wigand). However, if they're going to start targeting reporters merely for writing articles critical of Bush administration policies, this should be a very loud alarm bell in our national consciousness -- particularly since the step from there to prohibiting all criticism of the President is an alarmingly small one.

I understand that the Halliburton subsidiary KBR has the contract for constructing the detention centers around the country and a large number of them are already in place. When will the educated, the intelligent and the freedom loving constitutionalists be disappeared? To a student of history, this is all too familiar.

Speaking of knowing where we are and what we do; Google my name and there is a message to Doug where I thought his move to the country should have been kept a secret from prying eyes.
How did it get there? There are stories I've written; field trips I've lead. Out for the whole world to see and even a picture of me. I have no idea how this happens.
Just the fact that it's there sort of causes me to wonder if I'm being " Presented "
I am a Great Grandmother and of no harm to anyone physically.
The only thing I remember that could have caused this is I signed the " Impeach George Bush website" almost as soon as he was sworn in.
I feel I'm on the watch list because I get the extra searches at the airport every-time. I can see this sometimes because my carry on is field guides, binoculars,cameras, tripods.and these do look odd when they come through, but a few weeks ago I drove to Houston and flew back the same day. NO luggage They got me again. I try to make sense of it but haven't yet. WHY give Great Granny the full search?

We as a people need to vote out all sitting congressmen and congresswomen, senators and start anew. Make peace once again with cuba. Clean up the election laws with publicly funded transparent elections (with paper trail) and back the dollar with gold once again. Dear Doug ~ I lived and worked in the DC political arena for most of my life (nonprofs, "soft" causes) so I'm pretty familiar with how ugly and personal it can get. It happened to me on my last job there. You march to my tune, or I'll kick you out of the parade.

But this takes the cake, and the donut, and the cookies, and the pretzels (and what else do folks munch on there now besides each other ~ I've been in New Mexico for a few years). I would say, I can't believe it! But, sadly, I do believe it.

What I can't believe is why nothing is being done about any of this. Each new thing that comes out is more horrific than the last, and I'm beginning to think this is a new "distract the enemy" (the "enemy" being "we, the people") kind of tactic. Okay, no weapons of mass destruction, let's deviate the attention to "weapons of mass intrusion" against "we, the people," and then when that gets hot, lets deviate attention to the port issue; then when that gets too hot, let's start lobbing weapons of mass intrusion at the journalists ... just keep the attention jumping around so people don't have enough time to focus on or respond to anything.

The fact that the administration is doing this itself is a truly amazing strategy, but it seems to be working. Bush is the new teflon man. And with each new horror that takes us further and further away from true democracy (whatever that is), I sit and wonder ... okay, how come nobody has tried to impeach this guy yet. Look what they did to Clinton ... yes, pretty bad decision making going on there, but nowhere close to Bush's misappropriation of the constitution and sending his battering ram to destroy the division of powers our government is based on. Congress? What Congress?

And what is Bush's league ... is it the home team, or is it the little guy who comes out of nowhere and knocks everybody down league, or is it the league of talking blankly to school children after being told a plane has hit the trade center tower, the league of downing all air travel except the travel that got some of the people somebody might have actually wanted to question, the league of conjuring up a war with "proof" that didn't exist. And isn't it interesting that, all this time later, when the whole Homeland Security idea was supposed to get agencies communicating with one another, that we see yet another abysmal communications failure when New Orleans is devastated. Heaven help us if there is another terrorist attack.

So what is being done with all this "communications" power? Well, you covered it all. So what can "we, the people" do with ours? Suggestions? Write to? Written letters are better than emails...

I'm saving your blog in my "favorites," Doug, because it seems like you know what's going on, and the pablum we get fed out here, "beyond the Beltway," is a bit too easily digestible.

Doug, this couldn't have come as a complete surprise. Just this summer, you published the fact "they" have a file on you. Not too swift to send a letter to you about you, but hey that's government for you.
I posted some rather nasty comments on a message board a couple of years ago. No threats against anyone or this great nation. More rant than anything. Three days later the racket in my phone was to the point it was almost unusable.
I went to stay by my father who was ill. his phone line was replaced 3 times in 2 months and at times there was no service at all. He passed away in November. I moved back to VA and can you believe it, my brother who still lives in the house said the phone is fine. Dad never protested anything. I think he caught my "virus"??? Was he guilty by association because he took my calls several times a day?
I won't say how I got it stopped except to say it had nothing to do with the phone company. Of course after this little post..........

Anyone who thought that Phillip Roth's little gem of a book "The Plot Against America" was some retro little novel about pre-WW II antisemistism in America just didn't get it. The fact is there was a coup in America in 2000. Does anyone think Bush actually won that election? Does anyone believe that Rove & Co. ever intend to let power slip from their hands. They didn't kill or even imprison everyone - just a enough of the people to scare the shit out of evryone else, most of whom continued to go about their ordinary daily business.

Does anyone really beleive that everyone who serves a fascist state is a horrible bloodthirsty fascist? Do you think all the Brits in Northern Ireland are evil? Do you think all members of the Israeli army are evil? Do think every American in Iraq tortured people in Abu Gharib? Ordinary people can and often have, done extraordinarily bad things.

There's a lot of strong talk on this site but watch what happens when the shit really explodes. Your friends and neighbors will be gentle as they take you away. They will be kind and offer a "fair price" for your home. Doug, Lot's of "FUs." Lots of testosterum being released here. I'm 68, a former reporter and the daughter of blacklisted parents during the McCarthy era (mentioned a few times in the blogs above). In 1948 we went into hiding, within the states, and lived a double life for more than 5 years - beginning when I was 10. My father hoped by hiding he'd avoid being served a subpoena. If he was found and served when the HUAC hearings were in session, he'd have no choice but to go to prison, for up to a year. My father was lucky to avoid prison, but the FBI finally did discover where we lived, and he was tracked - in different cities - until he died (1980!). I saw our friends incarcerated because of their beliefs - in federal prisons - for refusing to "rat" on their friends. Families disintegrated. It was an awful era, but this has the potential of being FAR WORSE!

I second Jason Karov's suggestion (above) for donating some bucks to CHB, to be used for legal and related fees. It's pro-active. It's also a supportive act which would make us feel good that we are contributing to the preservation of CHB.

I suggest we might also think of writing - en mass but independently - to the DOJ (Justice Dept.), CIA, HLS, NSA, the FBI, et al stating we are aware the Federal Government is attempting to shut down CHB AND cut off a reliable source of TRUTHFUL information, which we find necessary to read because the Administration has been proven to be neither truthful nor trustworthy! If 25,000 letters hit one of these agencies, they'd be blown away. I would, however, sign using a nom d'plume rather than my full name.

Doug - Any better/other suggestions?

PS: I hope you are v. proud! You've been chosen as one of the early targets because your record for "breaking" news stories originating from the inner circles of the White House has been spectacular, accurate and very humiliating to the Little Weed that sullies that awesome and oversized chair in our Oval Office! elgee

The Constitution of the United States of America (COTUSA)and the Bill of Rights (BOR), applies to the elected government, not to the citizens! Are you surprised? You shouldn't be, read it sometime. The COTUSA, is the "framework of our government" and the BOR), "is not a list of our rights, but a list of restrictions placed on government, to protect our rights" With the COTUSA being a framework of our government, it sets forth the limits, and separation of powers, of our three government offices. The BOR, is the first ten amendments to the COTUSA, but do not remove, We the People (the voting citizens and patriots), from responsibility in supervising the elected government. The Ninth Amendment states "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." The Tenth Amendment states "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people." The Ninth speaks of unmentioned rights of the people, and the Tenth speaks of powers. The last four words in the Tenth Amendment read, "or to the people." From this I infer, the responsibility, We the People, to step forward, when we feel, the government (our employee), needs assistance or supervision, in carrying out their duties.

If the government disobeys the Constitution, or trashes it, then they have relinquished, their contract with We the people, and therefore they are out of a job and we don't have to pay taxes. We also need to toss the bums out, and rebuild a government.

But, since the military is in control of the weapons, we would need to inquire of them, of their intended goal, and if it involved following their oath of commission or enlistment, or the orders of those appointed over them. Since they are under oath to support and defend the COTUSA, they will have to make a choice. Remember they have the weapons, and the government has, committed treason, so now everyone gets to open carry loaded, their weapons of choice. We have a revolution!

Am I the only one worried that we won't have another election after the next one in November?
I think Bush will declare martial law because the cabal will blow something up (like the Twin Towers) and that will be that...the Army will patrol our streets after the 10pm curfew, any movemment of people in the US will be strictly controlled, we will all be implanted with ID chips with GPS technology, the government will control the radio and TV and all of us dissidents will be rounded up and put into concentration camps. I have already spent 2.5 yrs in one...I think I will become an insurgent if the above comes to pass. Yes, an insurgent...someone who fights for the freedom of his or her own country. I am pretty old (almost 70) but there is life yet in these old bones!

As a Canadian I am watching with Horror how USA is sinking in it’s own created quicksand …

I see a lot of talk from the American public yet there is no action what so ever . US is just about to repeat the Iraq fiasco but this time in Iran ( and on top of it involving Nuclear weapons ) and the American people do nothing but talk … US is just about to hit the $ 8.2 trillion debt mark and the American people do nothing but talk …

Well, I don't know what to say about all this. There's more to this than meets the eye. Sending out letters to news organizations to provide information about journalists and what they write is disturbing. All this from 9/11. And with all the "obscure" facts surrounding who did it, I find it interesting that the strongest candidate for investigation of that crime are the very people instigating this witch hunt. It's more than obvious that they're scared and they're running to protect themselves. I'd be scared too with 3000 dead souls on my hands and two pre-empted invasions of countries with one based concretely on lies. But it's even deeper than it's acknowledged. Both houses sided with this executive's unconstitutional laws. There's alot of house cleaning to be done in America, and I hope the people realize the full extent of how far they've been sold up the river.

I'm an Australian, and yes, we have our own evil empire to deal with, but, as it is a well known fact, our own dictator is nothing but a coat tail hanger of Amerika's own despot. I can't imagine why people are shocked or awed by this attack on civil rights by one who is in the White House courtesy of a coup d'etat in 2000 and through a fix of voting machines in 2004.

Did you think GWB just liked the view of the rose garden? Are you seeing the possibility that PNAC rigged this whole thing years before it happened? Do you not see a connection between this and 9/11 where the towers fell after underground explosions and building 5 that triggered them then also imploded? Did you not wonder when evidence showed that the Pentagon was hit not by a suicide plane but by a missile? Did you not wonder when all the debris of 9/11 was illegally (according to US law) carted overseas so it could not be examined for evidence?

MARTIAL LAW SURVIVAL GUIDE

This article will start off assuming that the Reader (you) is already subject to MARTIAL LAW; that is, the "suspension" of the Constitution. Curfews, rationing of basic goods, enforced relocations, confiscation of firearms and supplies, and summary arrest/execution by soldiers, paramilitary police and other jack booted chumps in black wielding assault rifles. Basic survival tips will be followed by more detailed ideals on how to counter this coup against the American People.

The remainder will apply IF you're reading this before MARTIAL LAW is imposed by the current corrupt government. IF you are reading this while you still nominally under Constitutional Law, it's urgent you read from the beginning to end so as to appreciate the opportunities you currently have to not only protect yourself and yours, but to attempt to stop a coup.

SECTION ONE: SURVIVING MARTIAL LAW

Rule #1

Never take the government's word at face value-except when they tell you that they'll kill you.

Government-it's components of career politicians, bureaucratic vermin, and SS ninja wannabes live, have lied. For a lot longer than you'd think. It's the very job; being part of an empire wrapped in the cloak of American political traditions of Freedom, that corrupts. All that power, attracting the most venal along with the most patriotic to defend America. All that license under ever mutable law written by money whores to lie, steal, embezzle, blackmail, extort, poison, torture, enslave, murder.

Is it any wonder then that such human scum would get together and work "the system" to set themselves up as kings, dispensing with the pretty coverings of Constitutional limitations that trip their crimes like a prom dress? Taking as much as they can, while keeping YOU ASLEEP AS YOU LET YOURSELF BE SEDUCED AND PUT ASLEEP BY THEIR FELLOW TRAVELLERS IN THE MEDIA AND CORPORATE BOARDS?

Yes: a lot of the blame can be laid on your shoulders, American. You dropped the ball with going along with not finding the truth about JFK's assassination. Dropped the ball with MLK, RFK, Malcolm X. Dropped the ball with Vietnam, the air trafficker's strike that Reagan crushed, Iran-Contra. Dropped the ball with the 92 election-picking that drug runner and murderer Bill Clinton because he was charming… like a pimp. And boy did he pimp you out at the expense of Randy Weaver and his family, the 81 casualties at Waco, the peoples of the former Yugoslavia. You were too busy following Micheal Jordan and watching Friends.

Then you assholes really dropped it when George W. Bush STOLE the Presidency, with the media not even allowing a Ross Perot to run. If you would've elected him in 1992 in fact America could've been saved. BUT, you'd rather take government careerists at their word and plan your next outing to the mall than save your nation. Save your jobs, your freedoms, YOUR government.

Now it's gone. The criminals that've systematically taken over YOUR government they've removed the last vestiges of Constitutional law. Now it's law by the barrels of their assault rifles in your face-do ANYTHING other than obey in utter fear and you're dead. Or worse. You listened to their lies for over a century, you and your ancestors-where has it gotten you? Don't take their word on any "news" they have. Nor take their advice, their "assistance" their laws at face value because they manipulate everything they do to screw you.

What you can take their word on is, if you DON'T go along with them screwing you, they'll kill you for it.

Rule #2

KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Do NOT tell anyone anything that could get you in trouble. Assume anything can get you in trouble, because it probably will. Especially with any government official, but anyone looking to gaining a favor with the state can and will snitch on you. The rat who would sell you out for his thirty pieces could be:

*A small businessman looking for a in with the state so he can make money a little easier.

*A former friend who's looking to get some revenge.

*Someone desperate for even some food. Times are tough and will get tougher.

Again, KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Review the remaining rules of surviving MARTIAL LAW with Rule #2 ALWAYS in mind. Because some rat on two legs you say the wrong thing to WILL snitch to the "authorities" in exchange for favors or even brownie points… and then you get to find out how ironclad Rule #1 is.

KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT!!

Rule #3

ANY AUTHORITY FIGURE IS THE ENEMY! Unless you are waging a war of liberation-gathering intelligence or spreading disinformation or infiltrating-have no relation with nor voluntary contact with any soldier, police officer, bureaucrat, or anyone in authority in private life cooperating with MARTIAL LAW. Review Rule #1: they're all liars, con artists, hustlers, thieves, murderers. Same goes to any fellow travellers in big business; they and government have been in the same bed for a century.

Stay away from them as much as possible. Tell them lies. Don't do any business with them. Unless they're sticking a gun in your face don't even acknowledge that they exist.

Shun them, their family and any sycophants that fawn over them for a few favors.

Rule #4

YOUR PERSONAL SURVIVAL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN OBEYING ANY DICTATE! If you're prohibited from having an item that helps you survive, get the item, review Rule #2 AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.

If you're prohibited from having extra food, medicine, guns (no brainer) then you will CACHE your prohibited items in a place where it won't easily be found. Foods, after properly sealed for storage, and medicines can be placed in hollow spaces in walls, floorboards, stairs, behind false walls in closets, or even in a hidden underground pantry dug underneath your foundation or basement.

Firearms are metallic; they can be detected by metal detectors unless you store them deep underground or in a place they won't think of looking right away… like sealed in wider metallic tubes, or away from your property. And if you by chance acquire or keep firearms knowing HOW TO USE THEM(sight alignment, trigger squeeze) and RELOADING AMMUNITION will be mandatory.

(IF YOU'VE NEVER USED A GUN BEFORE…

To use a gun, first find the PROPER AMMUNITION FOR IT. After loading, pointed end forward, the ammo into the magazine, cylinder, or chamber load the weapon. On semiautomatic pistols if the slide-that moving part on top-is locked back there's a small lever on the left side of the gun. Push on it and it will close. Otherwise you'll have to pull the slide back yourself.

Pistols are concealable, rifles and shotguns are for starting a fight. Shotguns you load from a port on the underside, behind the fore stock or it breaks open. Rifles come in several flavors; single shot, pump, bolt action, automatic, and feed from the chamber, a internal magazine or has a detaching magazine. The rifle you want first and foremost is a automatic rifle in a military common caliber. That coupled with proper marksmanship transforms you from a victim to a freedom fighter.

Here's the most important part: see what you're aiming at… put your FRONT SIGHT where you want the bullet to go… then WHILE YOUR FRONT SIGHT'S ON TARGET align your REAR SIGHT with your FRONT SIGHT. …When your FRONT SIGHT and REAR SIGHT aligned like this more or less:
O target
( ( I ))
IIIIII I GUN WITH FRONT AND REAR SIGHTS ALIGNED

…when you're aligned and aimed AT THE SAME TIME DO A SMOOTH, QUICK PRESS ON YOUR TRIGGER. The gun will go BOOM! and will push back in RECOIL. Don't be afraid; think of it like setting off a firework, only you're also sending a lead bullet at someone. If you did all the steps right you'll hit.

Dry firing a empty gun at a target is one way to practice. Even better is getting a air gun, paint some targets on a sheet of paper and going at it until you can aim and land every round in the black as fast as possible.)

Rule #5

While keeping the above rules in mind ALWAYS HELP OUT THOSE WHO ARE RESISTING! They, unlike you, have decided that there's nothing to lose and therefore deserve anyone's help who's willing to risk their lives. You think MARTIAL LAW is going away on it's own? Those bastards in black will have a sudden change of heart and do something worthwhile for a change and not oppress you? I like to dream too…

The VERY LEAST: have extra food, water for resistance fighters, basic medical supplies, ammo caches(hint, these should be concealed).

A secret room either built from some closet space or under the home can house a couple of fighting Patriots. Those who fight will need to keep hidden, yet able to communicate with fellow fighters. You can be a intermediary.

You have skills, like welding, machine tools, chemistry? You can take that secret room and make weapons, ammo, other things the resistance needs.

You have inside information? Share it. You have videography experience, tools? Make how-to videos on resisting the theft of your freedoms. You have medical training? Set up a underground hospital.

Not all Patriots can or should pick up a rifle and blow a traitor's head off. Riflemen need ammo, food, a place to rest, medical assistance, repairs for their weapons, intel on their next target. Most of all they and you need each other because a man alone doesn't stand a chance. Only by uniting in common cause with all one has to offer can the traitors be defeated, and Freedom restored to the land.

…If you're not at least giving aid to those helping to liberate you put this article down, go back to being a victim of government oppression; maybe you can get by being a pathetic lackey they'll thieve from and occasionally beat or take sex from.

Rule #6

With the utmost care develop a SURVIVAL NETWORK. This is a group of people with skills and/or resources who can help each other in areas they would be lacking on their own. It could be anything from extra food, medicine, repair parts, fuel, transportation-whatever.

In any given neighborhood you can have machinists(weapon makers), medical personel, drivers(good knowledge of local roads), gardeners(agriculture knowledgebase).

Petty bureaucrats secretly opposing martial law are prime candidates to spy, steal, or commit sabotage.

Computer technicians can hack government systems and create surveillance systems and guidence packages for missiles.

Construction workers can build secret rooms to hide anything from a arms cache to a secret factory. People in the media can smuggle cameras and work with computer techs to: bug enemy meetings, produce freedom media that documents sucessful means of resisting and present government atrocities for the reasons why.

Salesmen can "borrow" merchandise from their stores for use-anything and everything is useful.

Especially useful will be disgruntled cops and military who can provide everything from intel on raids to weapons to training.

Keep the numbers of your group "small": smaller cells are more difficult to penetrate by enemy agents and professional snitches. Keeping that in mind, a means of communication independent from wiretapped phones and audible eavesdropping devices must be developed amongst you.

Runners can be a athlete or a kid on a bike. They can carry small packages, or notes with a handy breakable vial of flammable liquid if discovered. With a sealed packet of potassium chlorate taped to it the gasoline(preferable) will automatically ignite; otherwise you'll have to actually light that incriminating evidence.

A mail drop can be a home, a hollowed out tree trunk, a hole in the ground, a open fence pole-anything. Just be sure it's discreetly out of sight of surveillance.

If God's really liking you, one of your group will be a SMART SURVIVALIST. This will be a exceedingly rare breed, because most in this group were smart enough to begin preparing for the collapse to begin with. They WEREN'T smart enough to avoid detection of their awareness and distrust of government. They signed form 4477 registration forms for their firearms, used credit cards and checks for their weapon and ammunition purchases, registered for weapons permits, or registered themselves with gun clubs and shooting organizations. These people more than likely got swept up in pre-dawn raids or got blasted resisting.

No the SMART SURVIVALIST prepared-and kept his mouth shut about those preps. He or she never signed federal permit forms for purchases or carry license. He or she presented a "average American" profile or totally disappeared. Get or find one in your group and you'll have a literal treasury of knowhow and resources to survive… maybe even start taking back a little?

Rule #7

AVOID GOVERNMENT MONITORING AND CONTROL! Know where the cameras are and how to avoid them. Know who patrols where, and what routine they follow so as to avoid contact. Know your snitches and always feed them b.s. if you can't avoid them.

Find ways around checkpoints. Side streets, forest paths, neighbor's yard, railroad tracks, tunnels; whatever go arounds to getting from point a to point b without a pack of government troops searching you, checking your ID. I can't and won't go into detail; how you find your ways is up to you.

Rule #8

AVOID A GOVERNMENT ROUNDUP. It could be from a disaster, a attack, or even because they've decided to end the pretense and show you what they really think of you and your "rights". You'll just wind up in a detention camp where your freedom of movement and resources will be strictly controlled. That means having a place to go away from your area, a means to get there, and supplies.

Very difficult to do in a martial law situation, with shortages and rationing at gunpoint. Remember the victims of Hurricane Katrina; how they were set up to be stranded in New Orleans by the government? How they were constantly baited with false hope of rescue for a week after the catastrophe? How they eventually were herded by FEMA into concentration camps?

You disregard Rule #1, you'll find out.

Get a safe house of your own-a friend or a abandoned home, a empty storefront or even a patch of woods. When the troops start going street to street, house to house have escape routes by lesser used streets, trails, whatever. You may have to go on foot, so have a light backpack with a few days worth of nonperishable food, portable water purifier, a first aid kit, a light sleeping bag-and your weapon. A mountain bike may be a more optimal and versatile escape mode than your road-dependent car. Better to be on the run, desperate-and have your freedom-than be imprisoned in a FEMA slave camp.

Rule #9

Find a way you can successfully resist. Probably not with guns or bombs unless you have the training, but there's plenty of ways you can monkeywrench the basic functioning of the state during MARTIAL LAW.

If you work for the state you have plenty of opportunities to mess things up, but even private firms are subcontracted by the government. You know who's just earning a paycheck, who's backing this war against the people, and who's getting off on "just following orders". If you can take action, great; concentrate most of your planning on getting away with the job. Otherwise, get contacts with Patriots and be the most reliable source of intelligence you can be.

Every bit of drag on the government beast helps-perhaps in botching that paperwork, breaking that surveillance camera in disguise, or misdirecting that bureaucrat or soldier cop that act might be the beginning of a butterfly effect of bringing down the state of MARTIAL LAW and restoring Freedom to our nation. Always keep that in mind. You must find your own way, but find it you must if you want what was stolen from you back.


SECTION 2: HOW DO YOU TAKE A NATION BACK THAT'S UNDER MARTIAL LAW?

To be honest it's probably the most difficult challenge anyone can face. Because you're starting a conflict from scratch inside the belly of the beast. You can't fight for territory when you've only got a few guns against divisions of enemy troops equipped with automatic weapons, armor, air support, the pitiful acquiescence of a "people" who long ago gave up Liberty for the trap of existence of a childlike, cushy debt slavery.

So the smart coup leaders that prosecute a martial law takeover will do it against a population that's already been pacified in one way or another. Now with the gilding stripped off their chains they're as frightened hostages willing to go along with ANYTHING massah state wants so long as they have some semblance of their former "lives". Aside from sickened, disgruntled vets, the American People; untrained in the military arts or even basic survival have been pacified-or the coup would never have taken place.

It is simply fear of loss after being so coddled, so divorced as a culture from personal responsibility -although enough exposure to fear and the human psyche has a way of becoming psychologically inured to it… which can lead to anger, and then revenge.

No: better way to pacify is to bring it on in a overwhelming torrent onto a population unprepared for it, unprepared for hardships. Take away their culture, their moral cores, their connections to God. Ply them with trinkets and baubles and other junk-get them to find solace in material things, in distractions like spectator sports, television. "Our" junk culture.

Keep them hypnotized by a junk culture while their means of sustenance-their jobs-are shipped overseas piecemeal, so they don't wake up.

Keep them hypnotized by a junk culture, as even the know how of being able to survive outside the system; basics like growing food, repairing stuff, marksmanship is slowly stifled.

And all the time tell them they're free and prosperous. Eventually you'll have a people much like modern America's dumbed down materialistic debt slave. Such a people as ours, fed lies about our evil corrupt system as you find on TV are ready for a fall now as I write this. All that's needed is a plausable pretext, a cover story for the sheeple to accept the loss of their freedom in exchange for a impression of security in a land where the plenty of food and goods has been taken away.

Now some will see through the b.s.; but Humans can be stubbornly stupid when it comes to misdirected hope. These slaves, in every sense of the word, will actually defend the system that has enslaved them. Such is the enemy's genius at their social engineering. All those slavishly obeying the state in a martial law enviroment for some forlorn hope that their lives will somehow go back to the false paradise of the late 20th century will in effect be the enemy themselves.

You won't be alone. The enemy's genius is formidable, but not perfect. Quite frankly they're overconfident-and even if they weren't they're not God. They can't see all and will make fatal mistakes. The question will be, will you be man enough to exploit those mistakes to bring their downfall and save the Human Race?

How to beat the state when it has all the cards; can't take on an army with a pistol… but you can take on one of it's soldiers when you sneak up on him when they're not looking for it. If you're skilled with a rifle you can kill at distance and sneak off… if you have a supressor on your weapon you can do a whole lot of killing and not be detected. If you know chemistry, you can come up with all sorts of nasty stuff that can do damage to the enemy's expensive stuff.

If you have friends or fellow travellers you can do a lot more damage, even recruit if you have a video camera, editing system, and dvd duplicators(get someone skilled in video production) to advertise your victories and how others can duplicate your efforts, plus why they should fight in the first place.

If you're successful your area of operations will be overflowing with Patriots looking to bag as many jack booted thugs, bureaucrats and other traitors as they can get at. The excess Patriots can then spread out to other areas of our country, replicating as best they can what you've done.

With whole regions of the country infiltrated and secured secret industry can develop. Light weapons can be constructed at first, but eventually heavy weapons will be designed and made, and distributed. Ammunition, food, fuel, medicine-all can be manufactured on or made with basic machine tools and chemistry.

The time will come… if the enemy still clings to their forlorn hope of defeating the American People with the brainless thugs and sheeple that lick their boots… the time will come that OPEN WARFARE can begin and territory openly liberated.

After that… it'll probably devolve into a stalemate. The enemy isolated in their city/prison states unable to retake the surrounding countryside, but the Patriots not having enough strength to retake the cities. Or perhaps enough time because either the enemy develops some funky new superweapon, or their continued control of military assets overseas causes a outside power to intervene… on whose side… who knows?

BUT LET'S NOT LET THIS SCENARIO PLAY OUT!

Because a MARTIAL LAW will lead to CIVIL WAR… and national destruction… what I just described to you.

Let's NOT have a civil war, and spend the next century rebuilding. Much better to organize right now, as I write in October, 2005! We still have a political process we can use if we learn how to use it effectively. We can together find a small town and take it over-like the Libertarian's Free State Projects, only focused onto one town. Take that over, free it, and spread out from there. We as Americans need a standing example of what a Free State is; since we don't have the numbers to take over a state, we have to take over a town… so we can get the numbers to take over a state.

Even some in the traitorous elite don't want to see MARTIAL LAW because they recognize the exquisite control and enslavement the current American political system has over Americans, and want to keep their power. They can be used, then abused.

Individually, if you have guns, bury spares of your fighting arms, or sell them privately to new Patriot recruits. This will get easier as deteriorating conditions bring the reality of our situation home, and the government's conduct in New Orleans make personal preparation a priority.

Buy lots of ammo, food, medicine, reloading supplies. Get these at gun shows for CASH ONLY. Go to gun shows while they're still legal!

Find books on basic manufacturing processes-that's vital!

If you have EVER joined a gun group, bought guns and ammo with credit cards, checks, and/or signed registration forms and permits HIDE AND/OR SELL YOUR EXCESS GUNS TO MOTIVATED PATRIOTS! You WILL be searched first on "The Day", and if so much as a empty shell casing's found you can count on being starved, beaten and raped to death in a internment camp. Or maybe they'll take you anyway for being on record.

Start driving around: look for abandoned homes, businesses, and roads or trails that'll get you to them. Caves, forest haunts, old barns, the nastiest trailer in that tired old trailer park.

When you recruit, don't let them put their names on any forms that could implicate them in the eyes of the government. Keep their profile low-Patriots will need infiltrators, safe houses, spies… can't do that if you're still running around openly displaying a "I'm the NRA" sticker or a Gadsen Flag. Sorry.

Take your Recruits and:

*Toughen them up. Camping, survival courses, hand to hand combat courses. Even getting them to let their TV gather dust to do… anything will be of benefit. Demonstrations, projects, meetings, find places to hole up like anything without people around…

*Shooting, and lots of it! Paintball to teach tactics. A range of some sort for battle rifle practice. Airguns and required turning in of targets for their own practice-the airsoft guns are coming along as viable training tools and as soon as they perfect a paintball that'll cycle through them you should splurge a couple hundred bucks and get some guns and paintballs.

*Group buy ammo, parts, food, knowledge, a legal fiction to acquire property not under your own name, nor any connection to you. Have your stashes in several small units throughout the area you figure you're going to operate. The more the better, and, no one person should have knowledge of where all the caches are at. A cache should have ammo for the standard weapon/caliber your group should standardize on. I recommend a military pattern rifle in 7.62NATO, along with spare parts because they'll break down with all the shooting and abuse you're gonna heap on them. Enough ammo to refill all your carry mags for a mission. Also, nonperishable food. Should have lots of calories, carbs, protein. Medical supplies.

…No you're not going to get a lot of recruits. The enemy's cultural weapons are pretty damn powerful, and their mind control of Americans is exquisite-but not foolproof! On occasion a event will occur that will defy their spin control and b.s.-like the live coverage of Hurricane Katrina and their criminal abandonment of the Black Community to die in that open sewer so they'll abandon the city to foreclosers wanting a "Las Vegas on the Gulf". Point out the criminal abandonment of the government of their People. A lot of eyes were opened by that hurricane, and not all of them are going to shut again by the system's lies. Take your opportunities as they come.

Taking back the government-peacefully!

This is the preferable manner of us as groups reclaiming our Freedom. To be effective, one must have a understanding of America's political system as it relates to our cause. We have a president, a vice-president and their agents, a congress, a federal judicial system, and the duplication of this political layout among the states. Beyond that you have the many thousands of county and local governments. So what will work?

Take over the presidency?

It's long been proven that unless you have the blessings of the two official parties of this nation, you cannot seriously run for president. The closest independent candidate was Ross Perot back in 1992, and even being a billionaire didn't shield him from getting shredded by the media.

So, assuming the voting machines are honest(not)and the media's fair(not) you need the machine of a major party backing you(won't happen).

And the president can only do so much; America's system of government is extremely compartmentalized, so that unless you have a common ideology and party mechanism guiding and controlling the various components, it's impossible for one man to dictate policy. So a independent party president, one lone person against the rest of the hydra headed federal monstrosity is not only impossible, it's retarded even planning such a thing.

Congress?

Congress is made up of 540 members-100 senators and the rest in the house of representatives. All are elected in staggared election cycles so it would take approximately a decade of successful nationwide campaigning to create a majority party. Yes, congress writes the laws and taking it back is essential in our struggle, but even factoring out the two official parties and their political machines the structure of this body demands a massive political machine of our own.

Massive organizations that have a heirarchial structure have been penetrated, subverted and corrupted by our enemies since the beginning of time. It's a process that to them is a natural as breathing. Then there's all the fundraising that will be needed and we're not rich-the only ones with money in America are the same pack of vampires who've been sucking us dry. So a singular, national organization will not be sucessful.

Independent and rogue candidates however do have some success. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Tom Tancredo of Colorado, Ron Paul of Texas, and at one time James Trafficant of Ohio sadly represent the successes. Most candidates are attorneys who've long ago prostituted themselves. They whore themselves to the political machine that will take them where they want to go. All they want is power and in exchange have legislated the monstrosity American government has become. The democrats and republicans, their bosses for all practical purposes appoint these elitists their congressional seats and they're prepared to spend whatever cash it takes to take or retain that seat. Vote fraud of course is part of their arsenal.

There are no rich left in these times who would willingly sacrifice their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor-they're either sold out or scared. So any candidates for congress will have to be raised and funded by us. That means we have to do it in a grass roots manner. We have to build not one political machine, but a army of political machines that are independent of one another, yet cooperative.

Many small parties, one common agenda

This form of political resistance lends itself naturally to our groups. It will go like this:

The group helps other groups form. They in turn during the next local election cycle turn out and get the candidates they choose elected in town and county governments. Much of the oppressive laws plaguing us are drafted and enforced locally. Taking over local governments will not only give the freedom groups relief from local law enforcement harassment, it will give us the tools to revoke and repeal such things as:

Property taxes that allow the government to sieze that home you're working a lifetime to pay for if you miss one "rent" installment. Those in power whine that property taxes are for the schools and the children-isn't that what their gambling rackets known as the lotto are for? And they're willing to make you and yours homeless for the children… such evil makes me just want to shoot them. But let's try not to go there yet.

All those damned zoning restrictions, regulations, speed trap traffic laws designed to churn up "tax" revenue, laws criminalizing all sorts of things and actions that bother nobody. Think of any local ordinance that seems to have been drafted by a neurotic control freak… the list would be endless really!

Un-Constitutional, pro criminal gun control legislation. A big part of their program's disarming us so that we're helpless and have to rely on them exclusively for protection, establishing dependence. Not that the cops are legally obligated to your personal protection of course.

Anything that pledges cooperation with state and federal authorities, at least until we take our nation back!

Another book recommendation: HOW TO WIN A LOCAL ELECTION. Should be in your local bookstore.

When we take back a local government and bring that jurisdiction back into line with the classic tenants of American government, it will be a beacon of light, an example of successful peaceful resistance. It will immediately inspire and launch similar efforts in neighboring communities. Each composed of small, decentralized groups working together on the big problem, so that one day they can afford to bicker on the small stuff-that the Libertarians, Constitutionalists, Christian Patriots and Conservatives currently do. So together, with control of enough cities and townships, the combined efforts of those groups can take over counties. With control of enough counties, an entire state can be taken over by our groups.

Why take that next step? The list of things we can do when we take back our local governments is vast, but then there would be the call to centralize governmental control with state and federal authorities. So when this begins we must be as aggressive as possible-being examples to others, advising, and most importantly WE MUST NOT FIGHT AMONGST OURSELVES OVER STUFF WE CAN DEBATE AFTER WE RETAKE OUR LAND! Backbiting will be exploited by our enemies, it will be our biggest downfall.

And if we can take the nation back…

There are many things we must do immediately, as soon as we can take back control of America's destiny.

(1)Secure our borders from any further infiltration. Whatever that takes, whatever manpower's available, we must find a way to seal up thousands of miles of hinterland border, and many thousands of miles more of coastline. This will take bringing our troops and ships home, and in effect end America's era of being used as a tool of global empire. It will be good, as being number one just makes you the one everyone else wants to take out.

At the same time, a heightened state of alert must be maintained if another power were to take advantage of our transistional phase and attempt some economic or military adventure against our interests. America will be painfully contracting from it's global economic empire as we attempt to revive a self-sufficient free republic and the last thing we'll need is for Muslims seeking revenge against the Empire, or China rolling the dice on a military adventure against us.

(2)Impose a flexible series of tariffs so that no matter where on Earth a imported good is made, it's cost after going through customs is just a few percent more than one made in America-with all the taxes still imposed. This must be implemented by law for I'd calculate twenty years; because this is the minimum time required to rebuild America's manufacturing economy. The rest of the world's just going to have to learn to live economically without the American consumer, and the American consumer is going to have to learn basic economics. It will be a horrifically shocking adjustment, and lead to a economic collapse-of the megacorporations. It's the bitterest medicine, but America and Americans have become almost terminally sick with the current system imposed upon us and those that don't immediately take steps to save themselves will need some hard lessons quick to bring them back to reality.


AND WHAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO?

Most important thing you can do? Pray. I'm serious. Don't do it in some gay mega-church and tithe to some blowdried huckster-do it like Jesus taught. Find a quiet place, quiet your mind, and open your heart. God WILL talk to you , or at least convey some feeling. You can't listen because you're out of practice listening so, practice. Eventually God will talk to you, and it's in your best interest to listen because God does love you!

He isn't looking to burn you for eternity for your petty imperfections. He's looking to liberate His People-all of us. Can't liberate a people if they're dead from some "bible prophecy" going on as scripted: wouldn't the events of Revelation carried out as written be a victory for the devil… wanting to possess and destroy? Humanity's all but destroyed in the end of that book. Why not fight to derail that outcome?

Cincinnati Ohio here and aware of the big scam that is happening to our country. The question is were we ever Free or has it always been a planned smoke and mirror operation? The men that wrote our freedoms such as the constitution were also powerfull men that were members of some of the same sercret societies that today's elite belong too. I think this runs much deeper then even the awake people know. Maybe the fear of loosing the country is really what they want us to feel. Maybe we just need to realize this life is one experience of something greater and in the end we ourselves have the power to mentaly change our enviornment. (i.e. enough people think positive we will get positive results)

Either way you have to think that fear and turmoil has always been their goal. Let's keep smiles on our faces and face them with pure positive energy knowing in the end they cannot change what matters most. Our will to do good and help the fellow human!! Those who have no fear will win in the end.

My fellow Americans, regardless of our political affiliations or preferences, we all share a common goal and concern and that is, our individual rights and freedoms.
While many Americans are aware of the aggressive laws being enacted, that actually impead upon our Rights and Freedoms, just as many Americans are equally unaware. America is quickly becoming a country that is strictly ruled by Big Government and Big Money, without any concern for the citizens of America.
As we Americans continue to hold a false belief that our Government conducts itself with the exclusive interest of the American Citizen being their first and highest priority, our Government is quickly undermining our way of life by manipulating and creating laws that clearly drives a wedge between the power of the American People and the Government by the People.

It is up to the American Citizens and "not" the Government, to save America from the Government as it continues on this path of destruction, of "Government by the People".
We must not and can not, continue to allow ourselves to become a passive force and voice, in the shaping of our country by simply ignoring the events currently enveloping our lives within our Governmental structure.
As each year, month, week, day and hour passes, laws are being passed in the guise of Freedom, but whose freedom do these laws protect, should be the question we must all ask ourselves and the law makers of America.

Are we Americans actually naive enough to put blind faith in our Government to conduct itself in a manner that is beneficial to the interest of all Americans, without jeopardizing our fundamental rights and freedoms?
As the days since 911 grows into years, we have seen many changes occur that has removed the power of the people to have a Government by the People, towards a Government over the People.
This is a disaster in the making to allow such Government rule over the people of these United States. Do we really want a Dictatorship Government or would we rather have a continued "Government by the People-For the People"?
It is up to each individual citizen of America to be informed beyond what the controled Major Media Networks allow us to hear, by manipulating the real truths behind the stories.

Have we already forgotten that Power tends to Corrupt and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely?
Have we become so passive that we no longer wish to be responsible Americans, with a responsible Government, that has a duty to answer to all Americans for actions not conducive of a responsible Government? Let us not forget that this country was established because of a Government "over" the people, and our Founding Fathers went to great lengths to establish our Constitution so that the Citizens of America would no longer be ruled by a Tyrannical Government.
Will our generation be looked upon by future generations as being the generation that let America fall to Government rule over the People?
I simply cannot say it enough, America wake up and take back our Country and establish a responsible Government once again!

America can not and must not be manipulated by Government rhetoric using fear tactics and the like, to turn this country against itself.
We no longer seem to have proud Americans standing up to state they are Americans, but what we do have is, Americans, one after another standing up and saying "I'm a Democrat or I'm a Republican", as if this defines their commitment to this Country and denies the others.
The time has come, that all Americans once again set aside political preferences and become a Nation of Patriotic Americans, and Unite to Defend our Constitution from a Tyrannical Government!
The Constitution is NOT a piece of paper, it is America, and it is what we Americans must hold in the highest regard, above any form of Government, with Pride and Determination, till death do we part.

wow, feel the waves of hate and discontent...I think one thing that's wise to do when contemplating the whole issue of what freedoms are, prudence and so forth, is the fact that we don't make use of those freedoms on a daily basis, and so like with unused muscles, there's a lot of complaining from the body at the outset.
Similarly, there's an outcry from the body politic over it's previously uncomplaining
members and constituents, but unlike a muskuloskeletal complaint, this one won't get fixed with drugs and massage, it's just going to have to work itself out.

I really and truly believe that the internet should be hailed as 'The Bringer Of The Democratic Renassance' in america...for too many years, frankly nobody gave a crap about some long-standing problems quite simply because prior to the Information Age, no one knew about a lot of em. It stands to reason, the world's not perfect, nor is america.

At the same time, you should always strive to balance vitriol with sound reasoning and well-thought-out discourse. Find a copy of Robert's Rules Of Order, the debate handbook basically,
and think in terms of having civil debate.
People are probably 10 times more likely to listen to whatever it is you have to say if you keep your head AND your manners with you when you say it. No one wants to hear some jerk who's just venting his spleen about this or that like a 10-year-old complaining 'cause his TV got cut off.

We live in 'interesting times'. What's REALLY interesting to me is that people aren't rallying to have a National Energy Conservation Program or something similar. The problem is obvious: We
have met the enemy, and he is us, so to speak.
Before you accuse me of being a communist, unamerican godless commie pinko etc., hear me out: We've known there's an issue with oil since, oh, about 1973. No one listened to Jimmy Carter in his sweater talking about the merits of energy independence or the pitfalls of reliance on foreign energy, words that Bush is now repeating, and our chickens are coming home to roost. Parents blithely ignored school systems for years, now kids can't hold a candle to countries like India, China, and elsewhere that are making a MINT off us annually in sales of goods to the US. People ignored the reports of declining polls, meaning less people AT the polls than expected during votes and elections,
now we've got BushCo. No one really listened to Eisenhower either, and now we've got MegaCorp etc., er, 'defense', doing pretty much whatever it damn well pleases, and that 800 lb. gorilla
sits wherever it wants.

This nation is 8.2 trillion in debt, soon to be 9, if the news has the debt cap estimates right.
Can people, WILL people refuse to listen to the likes of Matthew Lesko with the free handouts,
or have we become entitlement-americans, perpetually beholden to some type of handout from Uncle Sam?

It can be successfully argued that We, The People, get the government we vote for(or by not voting, as the case may be.) Are YOU a registered voter? If not, it might be a point to ponder...I'd just as soon not have large corporate interests from god knows where telling Congress what to do, basically, and as the old saying goes 'money talks'...how much do YOU save per year? Do you have a retirement plan, OTHER than social INsecurity? Would you vote for politicians or legislation based on the premise that they would enrich you? What are YOUR principles? These and other lofty questions are frequently only aired in literature, which is where, to my opinion, the internet has really shown a lot of promise.

If you think about it, today, more information is available to people than at any point in time in recorded history. What we choose to do with that information is a subject of great debate, and also a subject of our personal conscience,
in the sense that most good tools can also dually be some kind of weapon in the hands of an unprincipled person or people. That's where the
whole issue on the wiretap debate gets interesting, because like money, knowledge is also a form of power. Power tends to corrupt...
To get biblical, eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge got Adam and Eve tossed out of Eden on their cans...somehow they made it, if they hadn't, according to the Bible, we un's wouldn't be here today...likewise I think america will survive the Information Age, but not by selling ourselves down the river for a new DVD player, but rather by re-evaluating our basic principles and ethics, and examining our path towards the future.

Now, democracy's not a religion, per se, but rather a philosophy that people have rights, and a voice, and that that voice should help to guide society and the country at large on its' path to the future. Accordingly, people need a forum in which to express that voice, to make themselves heard, and communicate among themselves, not for some kind of subversion, but rather in the spirit of freedom of assembly.

The Grand Debate is not a plan to destroy ourselves, or our country, but rather a way to air grievances, discuss ideas, and generally
participate in open, public discourse. The greatest threat our freedoms and liberties face is not the narrowminded minority that would squelch partisan dissent, but rather that silent majority that doesn't ever speak up, either out of distractedness, fatigue, or apathy. I fully believe that national votes should be held more than once a year. People, the majority, the 'We, The People' reference in the founding documents of america as we know it today, should play a more active role in the collective choices our country makes, which doubtless places a burden on Congress of inestimable proportion, imagine having 300 million customers...but such are the challenges of a representative government in the Information Age...hopefully, the wiser heads will prevail on the issue as they invariably tend to on such things, and not give into the hotheads and fearmongers and knee-jerk partisan wonks prone to blaming their political opposition for everything from stopped clocks to moldy bread. Whether you count yourself as a Democrat, Independent, Republican, Chicken Taco Pizza, whatever, the point remains that people need to participate more actively in government,
and enliven the debate which of late has largely revolved around who's getting how much money this year, which is hardly a fitting topic for Congress, and continued focus on such pettiness and orchestrated avarice kind of raises people's eyebrows, makes em wonder what school these guys really went to, at the end of the day, and what their actual commitments are to the people that pay them, namely the taxpayers in america who will foot the bill for all manner of foolishness so long as they're willing to passively stand by and tolerate evidence of greed, incompetence, institutional apathy, and so forth. Reforms are healthy, but as with foul-tasting medicine, the patient typically protests loudly...

We gauge ourselves and so does the world we live in, by our demonstrated ethics. Idle lip service is all good and fine, but how much time do we take out of our lives to walk that block to work instead of driving, or helping the elderly, what are our expectations nationally of our government's role in society, or do we still have the pluck and determination to solve our own problems maturely and creatively when they arise?

My question is, 'what if New Orleans had been worse'? As it was, thousands of people died through collective negligence and lack of initiative. Does New Orleans now represent the collective american psyche throughout the world?
Do we look like selfish,lazy, apathetic idiots? Is there a grain of truth in that statement? I believe so. 'Garbage in, garbage out' so it goes with computers as with society and people.

Anyway, I say 'discourse away', just try and keep it above the waistline, and come out swinging!

We need to remember, these policies are not just those of the Bush Administration. The Patriot act was overwhelming approved by the Senate. This is fascism pure & simple.

Their actions are almost similar.

Gonzalez is the surname of our Justice Secretary and Bush Attorney General is also surnamed Gonzales.

The FATHER of these two President are both former President.

Add my support for your position, and quandry. What's happening in the country, and in the world in our name, is truly astounding, and heart-wrenching. I for one don't really know what more is necessary to stir us from our opiate-like stupor (really in truth a deeply seated fear).
Also, add my name to those who would appreciate seeing the harassment letter you've received, if you believe it would serve any purpose.

I'll give you a 'patriotic act'. WALK. Get healthy, be less of a burden on the healthcare system, unload the roads from one car, stop burning so much damn gasoline so that'll help reduce demand. That'd be pretty gosh-darn patriotic. If you wanna feel REALLY patriotic(and draw a lot of attention to yourself), I suppose you could walk WHILE carrying the american flag(properly, with no lighter).

Ever read 1984? Other than being a very depressing book, it kind of also serves as a warning against a future where the State Rules All etc. Bad scene, people living under the All-Seeing Eye of Big Brother, being told what to think and when to think it, Victory Cigarettes and Victory Gin, but it's also a love story,
Between Winston Smith and a young woman, maybe a dark and twisted variation on Lolita.

The book goes on to discuss things like Thoughtcrime, Sexcrime, and a list of other offenses that would get a person imprisoned or worse under the Ultimate Totalitarian Society
of Orwell's 1984.

Now, while some might argue that 1984 has come and gone and that we live in it still, I would recommend that they get OUT more, like that walk thing we were talking about before. It's too easy to convince yourself that the world is just such-and-thus, and not otherwise, be content with that evaluation, and then duck back under the covers and never re-emerge. My stand is that the world we live in is partly composed of our perceptions, and if those perceptions are inaccurate and we can't see clear to digest conflicting information, it can radically skew our points of view to the point where they're completely and totally out of tune with reality.

I try to catch some news every day, and I like what I'm hearing/seeing: we're finally seeing our way clear as a NATION to look at what we're doing with energy, and the future it's making for us...and energy's just one issue. I think people are also realizing they missed out by NOT hitting the polls, and that there are potentially DIRE consequences related to not voting, not a midnight knock at the door, but rather the slow but inexorable erosion of what we've come to expect and accept in our country in terms of ethics, standards, and generally the
way in which we're headed as a country.

Water is soft, rock is hard, but in time water washes the rock away, given time. Similarly, a fluid debate process will wash away a lot of our national 'problems' and they can find their way into the history book with the rest of their peers. Personally, I'm looking forward to hybrids and 'green' houses. In one way, the last 5 years or so have been a blessing in disguise for america, because now we've GOT debate, on something else besides 'da bears' etc.
I just wish we'd do more nationally, instead of buying more bombers or something, buy more windmills. Cut taxes by choking back 30% on spending overall. Tell people to fend for themselves and not just sit around waiting for a handout etc. 'American' should not be synonymous with 'entitlement'. Voters should re-take ownership of their respective parties from the special interests that have been squeezing them for every penny humanly possible, and get the country back on track. I support a full change of management in congress in 2006, I think it'd be a great thing, I think there's some bright and ethical people out there who could do really well in office, and not be susceptible to payola,
as it is a form of corruption that helps build
Orwell-style society, where there's only government and governed. Question is, can you run for office on your values and still make it into office, or have we slacked so bad into de facto vote-buying that the only value some people see in a candidate is the zeroes in front of the decimal point? Questions, and decisions, yes, many questions, and no easy answers. Insight isn't a quality that's highly valued in society today, and increasingly less and less people seem to have it. But, it's one of the keys to being a better person, and a better citizen, and voter, and hence is a tool to help build a better country. Sitting down and figuring out what YOUR values are, and how you can best express them through the act of voting
is a grey area, though, not something CNN's really in an all-fired rush to push at you in between Jeep commercials etc.

Anyway, vote regularly, vote consciously and deliberately, or stop complaining...

Divide and Conguer

Using party politics, it is easy to keep the American public divided and pointing fingers at each other while the leadership of both parties turns the
US Constitution into toilet paper.

The last thing on earth local, state, or federal governments want is for the public to wake up and realize that party politics is a ploy, a game, a startegy. Because if the public did wake up and realize this, no longer would they point fingers at each other, but they would unify in their convictions and question the role of UNconstitutional government in Washington. Thus, the finger pointing would be directed at all levels of government by nearly 300,000,000 Americans. That is the most scary thought any politician or bureaucrat has had in his political life.

So, keep marching in lock step to the demands of our leaders by arguing with each other. If you ever stop, you'll begin to question what you're doing and in particular, what your elected officials have done to your country.

I must have done to much LSD in the 70's (lol) . I am having flashbacks to a previous life in Germany in the 30's . Don't be surprised if we don't see a totalitarian government soon though . This type of abuse of power happens every so often in this wonderful country . If we see a Democrat administration continuing this abuse after the next election ... is it really 2 more years away ... all bets are off and I will be glad we once had the right to bear arms . Of course , the totalitarians might not be so happy about millions of gun owners .
I applaud the efforts of journalists to expose the abuses taking place now . Keep up the good work , man .
