The question burning in my mind, though, is why the fuck did no-one else protest? Apart from one girl you can hear screaming at the end - no one else lifted a finger. At the very least they could have got up and walked out. That would have made some impact. This widespread docility gives the State licensed bullies all the permission they need...

This time, for a change, no Police Violence. Instead, naked abuse of the voting system in a State Legislature. It's almost as though they were unaware that the cameras were running! The news item also makes the point, in the intro, that these same elected officials are trying to push through laws to mandate photo ids at balloting points - to prevent multiple voting. .

The story of Sibel Edmunds is a classic instance of why Trusted Surveillance is desperately needed inside government and, especially after Hoover, inside the policing and security agencies. If you haven't already watched "", it's time you did. And, while you're watching it, think how much simpler her case would have been with TS in place. Indeed, think how unlikely it would be that the embarrassing crimes she was clearly exposed to would have been committed in the first place...

And, of course, it constitutes yet more justification for imposing trusted surveillance on those who, up till now, have held authority over us. Yet more justification for reminding ourselves who is supposed to have the authority in what are supposed to be democracies.

Incidentally, it is also a classic example of what we might have to regard as "terrorism lite" in much the same way we're supposed to regard as (and could you have imagined in 1998 that we'd be reading stories like that about an American Government in 2008? Personally I didn't expect us to reach this level of authoritarianism until at least 2020. We're way ahead of schedule!).

My own definition of specifies: The lethal targeting of non combatants to promote fear throughout the enemy population. as one of two key defining characteristics of Terrorism.

Provocateurs may not actually kill non combatants, but they clearly have no concern for those who may be killed by the police in the subsequent riot control operation the provos have triggered.

That'll be criminal enough for the average jury when we get around to giving them perfectly fair trials before we hang the bastards.

But the most significant factor in this story? That this is Canada - Not the US of A. If you weren't shivering before, that should do the trick...
