The Elements which need protection will always include one or more of the four aspects: Content, Origin, Uniqueness and Ownership. One hash protects each element.

If Codel is going to be used to Protect a document, the time-stamped record of relevant hashes of the document must exist on our database. If the author is not already using Codel's Audit Trail Protection(ATP), which is essentially intended for the business data market, they will need our Codel Document Protection Software which can be used to create the required hashes, and submit them to the Codel database.

Clients using our ATP merely need to ensure that the relevant document is designated as Data Requiring Audit in their normal audit archiving procedure as described in their Local Data Audit Policy.

Non ATP clients must, of course, take personal responsibility for safeguarding their copy of the original document, as well as the data managed by the Codel Software. If their copy of the document is altered in ANY way, then although the Codel software will still be able to help prove that they lodged a claim on a given date, they will no longer be able to prove what document they registered. This, of course, is yet another example of the need to good secure backup procedures.
