If the chain of hashes is verified all the way up to the published Codel Master Document Hash then, for the first time, we can be absolutely certain that every document checked is exactly as it was when the data was captured to the Audit Trail.
This provides an unprecedented and previously impossible guarantee of integrity. No other system currently available can match this level of confirmation.
This is, of course, good news, but we must draw attention to the precise scope of our claim.
Proving the Integrity of the Audit Trail ONLY proves that nothing has changed since the data was captured.
It DOES NOT prove that the content of the data is "correct" or "accurate".
It cannot, therefore, prove that the data itself is NOT fraudulent. Indeed it helps to prove, if required, the exact opposite: that someone corruptly entered false data.
We can not - strictly speaking - even claim that it prevents amendment to the audit trail. At best we DETER amendment by making it widely known that any attempt at amendment cannot escape detection.
Even that requires a proviso. Someone MUST go looking for the evidence of amendment. In other words, if the data is never properly audited, then all sorts of amendments remain possible.
Codel, however, is capable of proving both the negative and the positive.
